People are reading this!
First things first...KRS-One is fan-freaking-nominal, hip-hop shows have generally been a let down in my experience, not KRS-One. Insanity I say, insanity! Words do not do justice...WOW. Those who caught the show are lucky folks indeed. Looking forward to Lewis Black this Sunday at the NAC.
As for the response to the Ignatieff post, its genuinely exciting people felt compelled to engage. I am by no means an Ignatieff expert, nor do I have any vested interest in who becomes the next Liberal leader. But honestly, from what I've read it seems Ignatieff supports torture, perhaps his view is more nuanced than, say, D. Rumsfeld's, don't give him a lot of credit for that however. I believe torture is wrong full stop. According to very reputable and knowing sources it doesn't work, furthermore the idea of spreading democracy through torture seems like a bad gameplan.
If Ignatieff and/or his supporters don't want people talking about how he supports torture, then he shouldn't support torture.
Sometimes I don't manage to check the blog as often as I should, if anyone would like to send me a direct email feel free to do so at...vpsi@cusaonline.com
Happy belated Thanksgiving
Big respect to all the turkey basters out there, for me this year it was my dad's girlfriend (Andrea) and my girlfriend's mom (Jean)...love it!

VP Student Issues

6 Comments:
Maybe you should be focusing your efforts on student issues rather then divulging in to political area that are not the mandate of CUSA or CFS. One of my biggest complaints against any union is the attention they give to other issues that are unrelated to there true goal. In my opinion this makes them ineffective.
I don't think defending human rights are outside of CUSA's or any union's mandate. Nor should we ignore the fact that significant social change often occurs when unions move beyond "bread and butter" issues.
Moving into politics and taking political views that not every member of the union supports is wrong. Its not right for them to support a cause with my union dues that I don't agree with.
The union is a democracy. Go to a council meeting and put forward a motion. Talk to your executive.
Frankly, I think what they have done is right.
Unions are not democracy, they are forced association. I didn't ask to be a member of CUSA, the CFS or RRRA, it was forced upon me. Unions should also be about consensus a common ground should be established on what should be worked on not what the executive or leaders think.
On another note, I doubt Buzz Hargrove had a vote for his union before he decided to support strategic voting.
This blog is called the cusa EXECUTIVE blog.. not the "official policy of Carleton Students as represented by CUSA blog"
Though some of the issues are official CUSA policy, ie tuition reductions, I really think you are getting overly worked up here mr. monks. This blog seems to be meant to show us the personality, musings, and opinion's of the members of the CUSA exec, as a measure to make them seem less intimidating, so more people will feel comfortable approaching them.
I hardly think Shawn's love of Ceaser's is an official CUSA policy, and I dont think that Shawn's post about ceaser's implies that he is "wasting his time focussing his efforts on the composition of a good ceaser"...
If you are interested in student issues, then maybe you should come out to a SIAC meeting, or send the exec an email about an idea you have.
Maybe you are right and this blog is a waste of time, but I really dont think that this represents a diversion and waste of CUSA resources. Its entertaining, and is encouraging students to interact with the executive as individuals and equals.
However, in regards to unions paying attention to political causes outside their "true goal", this is not always a bad thing. Its about building solidarity, and seeking areas of common interest/concern, so that when the union in question under goes an action towards their goal, they are not doing it alone.
